How to see profit by product in Shopify
Add a cost per item to your products and variants, then go to Analytics > Reports, filter the category to Profit Margin, and open Gross profit by product. It shows net quantity, net sales, cost, gross margin and gross profit for each product that had a cost recorded when it sold.
Open the report
- Make sure your products have a cost per item. Profit is reported only for products and variants that had a cost recorded at the time they were sold.
- From your Shopify admin, go to Analytics > Reports.
- Click the Category filter, then Profit Margin.
- Open Gross profit by product, or Gross profit by product variant for each variant.
How Shopify works out the numbers
- Gross profit = net sales − cost of the units sold.
- Gross margin = (net sales − cost) ÷ net sales × 100. For example, $50 of net sales with $30 of cost is a 40% margin.
- Discounts and refunds change the margin, so the report can differ from the margin on a product's page.
- Products sold without a cost are left out, so net sales in profit reports can be lower than in sales reports.
Profit by product, vendor or day in one report
Tabula's Profit by product report shows net quantity, net sales, cost, gross profit and margin for each product, and you can group the same columns by vendor, product type, SKU, day or month instead. It uses each variant's cost per item as set today (Shopify does not give apps the cost at the time of the sale), and its Variants without a cost report lists what to fill in first.
